The Avenue of the Lions on Delos
Unknown
Colour general view of the archaeological site of Delos. In the foreground stand the Lions of Delos. Dedicated by the Naxians around 600 BC, they are placed on pedestals along one side of the “Terrace of the Lions”, which began at the archaic harbour and led to the Sanctuary. The statues, carved from Naxian marble, are depicted seated in a vigilant pose, with elongated bodies and raised heads. In the background stretches the archaeological site, while tourist vessels can be seen to the left.
