The Venetian Lower Castle in Chora of Andros
Kontos Nikos
Colour photographic view of the Venetian Lower Castle in Chora, Andros by N. Kontos. Visible is the stone bridge, the “arch”, linking the islet to Riva Square on the eastern peninsula. At its summit appear the ruins of the castle built in 1207 by Marino Dandolo to protect against pirate raids and which served as the administrative centre of the Venetians. At the foot of the rocks bathers can be seen enjoying the sun, while others swim in the crystal-clear waters.
