Colour photographic view of the medieval settlement of Anavatos in Chios. Stone houses, built amphitheatrically on the steep hillside, with small openings and flat roofs, form a compact fortified ensemble. The settlement was devastated in 1822 during the Ottoman massacres and finally abandoned after the destructive earthquake of 1881.
