Women in the traditional costume of Olympos, Karpathos
Voutsas B.
Colour photographic portrait of a young girl wearing the traditional costume of Olympos on Karpathos, photographed by V. Voutsas. She is surrounded by young women, all wearing the “kavai”, the most characteristic and formal festive costume worn by both younger and older women of Olympos. It consists of an inner embroidered cotton dress with lace, an outer woven dress in light black or dark blue (kavai), a belt, a brocade apron with colourful braids and a headscarf. Around the girl’s chest hang necklaces with gemstones and a medallion bearing a gold sovereign.
