Kontos Nikos
Colour photographic view of the Monument to the Unknown Sailor in Chora, Andros. It stands in Riva Square, at the lower end of the eastern peninsula. Dedicated to all sailors who lost their lives at sea and never returned home, it depicts a bronze sailor gazing over the Aegean Sea and saluting with his raised right hand, while carrying a duffel bag over his left shoulder, ready to embark. It is the work of sculptor Michail Tombros and was unveiled in 1958. At the base of the statue a woman and a small boy can be seen gazing in awe at the imposing monument.
