The Hall of the Poseidoniasts of Berytos on Delos
Parissis Romylos
Colour photographic view of the Poseidoniasts’ Hall on Delos, photographed by N. Kontos. This building, with its central peristyle courtyard, large banqueting hall, living quarters and cult areas, served as the clubhouse of the association of merchants, shipowners and warehouse keepers from Beirut, who were active on the island under the protection of the god Baal, identified with the Greek Poseidon. In the middle ground dominates a restored section of the peristyle colonnade, consisting of four continuous columns and an architrave. In the foreground is a low stone-built wall with poppies among the green wild grasses. The background is occupied by the arid Cycladic landscape with dry-stone walls and hills.
