Colour photograph of a woman wearing the traditional costume of Olympos on Karpathos, photographed by V. Voutsas. The young woman is depicted on a rocky shore against the vast blue sea. She wears the “kavai”, the most characteristic and formal festive costume worn by both younger and older women of Olympos. It consists of an inner embroidered cotton dress with lace, an outer woven dress in light black or dark blue (kavai), a belt, a brocade apron with colourful braids and a headscarf.
