In this historic performance of August 24 and 26, 1960, the leading role was performed by Maria Callas. The photograph captures the moment where Pollione follows Norma onto the pyre and sacrifices himself with her. The tenor Mirto Picchi can be seen on the altar, and to his right stands Callas.
